Bill Could Block Cities From Citing Drivers Who Park at Broken Meters

Although the state of California says motorists who park at broken meters are not to be ticketed, this new law comes with a crucial exception: Cities can opt-out and enforce the no-parking rule and issue tickets anyhow. Los Angeles recently became one such city, with the Council voting 12-1 in favor of issuing tickets to drivers who leave their car at broken parking meters. Now, however, Assemblyman Mike Gatto's bill could put the brakes on L.A.'s plan: The bill, AB 61, would prohibit local governments, such as cities and counties, from enacting an ordinance that bans parking in a space controlled by a broken meter or broken kiosk for on-street parking. In defense of their adoption of the exception to the law, L.A.'s City Council says the meters around town are equipped with a mechanism that signals the transportation department when the meter needs repair, and repairs are said to be handled swiftly. Depending on the success of the motion, or the success of AB 61, L.A. motorists may be able to once again park at broken meters without fear of the meter maid. [LAist]

Armstrong tried to donate $250,000 to anti-doping agency

After conquering cancer and winning seven Tour de France titles, Lance Armstrong became an American icon. However, after years of doping allegations, which the cyclist steadfastly denied, the sport's governing body stripped him of his titles and banned him for life.

A Lance Armstrong representative tried to make a donation of about $250,000 to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency before the agency launched the investigation that led to the cyclist being stripped of his Tour de France titles, the chief of the USADA said. "I was stunned," Travis Tygart, the head of the anti-doping agency told "60 Minutes Sports'' about the alleged 2004 offer. ''It was a clear conflict of interest for USADA. We had no hesitation in rejecting that offer.'' Armstrong attorney Tim Herman said there's no truth to the story."He never made any such contribution or suggestion," Herman said in a statement. Additionally, Armstrong will give his first television interview since being stripped of his Tour de France titles to Oprah Winfrey, her network announced Tuesday. A news release from the Oprah Winfrey Network said the 90-minute "no-holds-barred" interview will air at 6 p.m. PST January 17 and will be simulcast on Oprah.com. [CNN]

Tentative Deal Could End NHL Lockout

Big News! Looks like we’re going to have hockey this year. Some people are saying that it could start as early as Jan 15th.   This will be an exciting year with the Kings defending their Stanley Cup victory. Here’s a note from the Kings camp:  The NHL and the NHLPA have reached a tentative agreement on the framework for a new 10 year Collective Bargaining Agreement. While this is fantastic news, there are many details to be worked out including the new season schedule and how it will affect your partnership elements. You can expect to be contacted by your Sales and/or Service Representative in the very near future. We are working diligently to compile all information so that we can have a seamless transition to being back on the ice. In the meantime, I cannot thank you enough for your patience over the past few months and, more importantly, for your loyalty. Your support has meant a great deal to me and to our organization. We look forward to seeing you soon. It will truly be a special moment when we are able to raise the Stanley Cup Championship Banner at STAPLES Center for the first time in Kings history. Go Kings Go! Django Unchained’ Action Figures Spark Outrage

NECA Django Unchained 8 Inch Action Doll Broomhilda Von Shaft New!

Action figures associated with the Quentin Tarantino film “Django Unchained” are proving as polarizing as the film itself. The 10 dolls depicting the movie’s main characters are available online. The Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network has called for a national boycott of the action figures, which black community leaders say are offensive. There is already a petition on Change.org asking Tarantino to immediately stop the sale and distribution of the dolls. Doll manufacturer National Entertainment Collectibles Association and the Weinstein Co. have not commented. “Django Unchained” has already been the subject of criticism over it’s graphic violence and frequent use of the N-word. Still, it has been a hit at the box office, with over $108 million accumulated domestically. It has also garnered five Golden Globe nominations. [KTLA]
