One of the largest Fourth of July fireworks shows in the nation was ruined in San Diego Wednesday after a glitch caused all the pyrotechnics to ignite all at once. About five minutes before the Port of San Diego’s Big Bay Boom was to begin at 9 p.m., spectators saw a brilliant display of fireworks that shot up in only 15 seconds – an incredible disappointment to hundreds of thousands of spectators who had waited for hours for the 18-minute show ). The Big Bay Boom is advertised as one of the largest fireworks shows in the nation, and boasts about attracting half a million spectators.  [LA Times]

"The Amazing Spider-Man" lit up box offices on its first day in movie theaters, catching $35 million in its sticky web and breaking a record for a Tuesday opening, distributor Sony Pictures Entertainment said on yesterday (Wednesday). Sony Pictures said the 3D movie's box office total, which included $4 million from giant Imax theater screens, broke the previous record of $27.8 million for a Tuesday debut held by the first "Transformers" film that opened on July 3, 2007. Giant Shark Caught Off Southern California Coast

An 800-pound shark was killed about 15 miles off the Southern California coast Monday. The giant shark was taken to Marina Del Rey Landing, where it took several men to lift it out of the water, the Marina Del Rey Patch reported. "It's been at least a couple of years since I've seen anything that big," said Tony Velardez, assistant manager at Del Rey Landing. "Our scales only go up to 750 pounds." [KTLA]

Joey "Jaws" Chestnut has successfully defended his title at Nathan's annual hot eating competition in Brooklyn, New York, tying his world record by downing 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes. His victory Wednesday marks his 6th win at the competition. Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas also defended her title, setting a women's world record by downing 45 hot dogs. Thomas weighs about 100 pounds. Thomas was seeking to hold on to her title: a record 41 hot dogs and buns. "My technique is, I dunk two hot dogs in the water cup and then eat," she said. [KTLA]
