Toenut play a unique brand of rhythmically complex, experimental alternative rock topped off by the unearthly vocals Katie Walters. Atlanta natives Skipper Hartley and Richie Edelson sowed the seeds of the group back in 1991. Toenut recorded their debut single, Heyward/Information, for Half Baked Records in 1993. The track drew the interest of famed indie producer Kramer, who allowed the band to use his Noise New Jersey studio to record a demo. Through Kramer, the group met producer Steve Watson, who would become an important collaborator. Mute Records signed Toenut in 1994. The group's lineup was still in flux, however, particularly in the drummer position.
